India clinches ICC T20 WC trophy by upsetting Pakistan

JOHANNESBURG: Keeping the legacy “India have never lost to Pakistan in the World Cup” alive, India clinched ICC Twenty20 world Cup trophy by upsetting Pakistan in the final at the Wanderers on Monday.
Misbah-ul-Haq of Pakistan managed to steer Pakistan from worst defeat but he too could not help Pakistan to win the ICC Twenty20 world Cup final.
Pakistani bowlers and fielders had restricted India to 157 runs but the batting line of Pakistan utterly failed in the final.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni's young Team India snatched the inaugural Twenty20 world title after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan by five runs in a rousing final.
The Indians, restricted to 157-5 after electing to take first strike in good batting conditions, fought back to bowl out valiant Pakistan for 152 before a sell-out crowd of 32,000 at the Wanderers here

Sri Lanka hammer Kenya by 172 runs

Mahela Jayawardene's Sri Lanka smashed the record score in Twenty20 internationals to trounce Kenya by 172 runs at the Wanderers.

Jayawardene's men piled up a gargantuan 260 for six after being asked to bat first by the African minnows in the World Twenty20 contest and powered their way past Australia's previous high of 221 for six against England in Sydney earlier this year.

Master blaster Sanath Jayasuriya savaged 88 from only 44 balls and Jayawardene scored at an even quicker rate, his ability to execute elegant strokes powerfully reaping 65, off only 27 deliveries.

Yet they were outdone by a spectacular cameo from Jehan Mubarak, who struck five sixes and three fours to reach 46 from a dozen balls.

One more boundary would have obliterated Mohammad Ashraful's record for the fastest half-century, a 20-ball effort against West Indies yesterday, but he missed the final delivery of the innings, sent down by Peter Ongondo, completely.

Medium-pacer Lameck Onyango took the brunt of the punishment as left-hander Mubarak peppered the stands between midwicket and long-on to hit four sixes in the penultimate over, which cost 29 runs.

In response the Kenyans barely got out of first gear and only managed five boundaries in the entire innings of 88, to emphasise the huge gulf in class.

The crushing Group B victory sends the Sri Lankans, sporting their new silver limited-overs kit, into the second round alongside tomorrow's opponents New Zealand with Kenya, semi-finalists in the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, heading home having been thrashed by both.

Dravid resigns as India captain

Rahul Dravid has resigned as India captain with immediate effect. In a letter written to the Indian board, he has asked to be relieved of the captaincy before Australia's forthcoming tour of India, beginning later this month.

The board president, Sharad Pawar, said Dravid told him of his wish to step down, with immediate effect, when they met on Thursday. "He said, 'The selectors have placed faith in me to lead continuously for two years and I'm grateful for that'", Pawar said. "He said he would like to concentrate on his batting and the opportunity should be given to a new person to lead the side."

"He has discussed the issue with me twice. I think we need to respect his decision," Pawar said.

Dravid had opted out of the ICC World Twenty20 currently on in South Africa and the captaincy of that team was handed to Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
